The Deal Pipeline Releases Rankings of the Most Active Firms and Professionals in Bankruptcy for the First Quarter of 2009

Since 2003, The Deal LLC's quarterly bankruptcy league tables, which also appear in The Deal magazine, have showcased the top firms and practitioners with active bankruptcy cases. Representing a snapshot of active bankruptcy cases and assignments, the following are such adviser rankings for the first quarter of 2009:

Topping the list of law firms with active bankruptcy cases is White & Case LLP with 822. Moving from the No. 6 spot in the fourth quarter of 2008 to No. 2 is Duane Morris LLP with 273 cases, and Greenberg Traurig LLP in the No. 3 spot with 261 cases.

Biner Bahr of White & Case LLP is the top lawyer with 299 active assignments. Sven-Holger Undritz of White & Case LLP is in second place (up from sixth) with 152 assignments and James S. Carr of Kelley Drye & Warren LLP is next with 128 assignments.

The investment banks with the most bankruptcy petitions include No.1) Houlihan, Lokey, Howard & Zukin Inc. with 51 cases, No. 2) Mesirow Financial Holdings Inc. with 37 cases, No. 3) Jefferies & Co. with 23 cases.

The top investment bankers include David Hilty of Houlihan, Lokey, Howard & Zukin Inc. with 12 assignments, followed by J. Gregory Barrow of General Capital Partners LLC and Brendan Murphy of Chanin Capital Partners LLC, both with 9 assignments. Tied for third place is Edward Casas of Navigant Capital Advisors LLC and William Hardie (up from ninth) of Houlihan, Lokey, Howard & Zukin Inc. both with eight assignments.

Among crisis management firms, FTI Consulting Inc. is the front-runner with 128 cases, followed by GlassRatner Advisory & Capital Group LLC with 51 and Alvarez & Marsal LLC with 47 cases. Ronald Glass of GlassRatner Advisory & Capital Group LLC is the top crisis management professional with 34 assignments. Edward Gavin of NachmanHaysBrownstein Inc. is in second place (up from sixth) with 21 cases, followed by Michael Eisenband of FTI Consulting Inc. with 20 cases.

The top non-investment banks include No. 1) Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu with 597 cases, No. 2) BDO Consulting Corporate Advisors LLC with 450 cases, No. 3) Epiq Bankruptcy Solutions LLC with 162 cases.

The top non-investment bank professionals include Daniel C. McElhinney of Epiq Bankruptcy Solutions LLC with 156 assignments. Tied in second place are Jonathan A. Carson and Eric S. Kurtzman, both of Kurtzman Carson Consultants LLC with 140 assignments. Up from fifth place, is Paul Weston of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu with 83 assignments in third.
