Top 5 Mom Lessons That Don’t Translate To The Workplace

She makes a mean lasagna but do mom's lessons apply in all of life's situations?

(PRWEB) May 8, 2009 -- In honour of Mother’s Day, ProActive ReSolutions’ conflict management experts have put together a list of the top five ”mom-isms” you may want to ignore in the workplace.

Sorry mom. I’m going to have to disagree with you on a few things:

Close the door behind you! Were you raised in a barn?
1 If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all – Sometimes difficult conversations need to happen to better the environment and make effective business decisions. Speaking up when you disagree is actually constructive if you’re trained to address differences in a respectful way.

2 If he pulls your hair or makes fun of you, it means he likes you – Actually, it means you have grounds to file a harassment claim. Plain and simple. Employees and managers alike should be trained in the written rules of the workplace and the consequences of breaking them.

3 Treat others the way you wish to be treated – With such a diverse workforce nowadays, it’s easy for actions and communication to be misinterpreted. Employees who exercise emotional intelligence treat others the way THEY wish to be treated. It’s all about respect.

4 “Close the door behind you! Were you raised in a barn?” – I don’t know where you were raised but in the workplace, a closed door is a sure sign of closed communication. An open door opens dialogue and tells employees and co-workers that you value their input.

5 Be yourself, it doesn’t matter what other people think of you –
In a perfect world, this would hold true even at work but unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world. A recent article on jobboom.com featured a quote from Penelope Trunk, CEO of Brazen Careerist. She stated,“People get hired for their skills and get fired for their fit.” Ideally you’ll find an employer where the “fit” is in line with your personality, but sometimes we aren’t that lucky. At that point, we have to bend a little to help our career.
