The United States Organizations for Bankruptcy Alternatives (U.S.O.B.A.), a trade association dedicated to the advancement of consumer protection in the debt settlement industry, is focusing on providing compliance guidance from industry experts for its 2009 Summer Conference. Stephanie Rosenthal from the http://www.ftc.gov Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Division of Financial Practices will address conference attendees on how debt settlement firms can properly comply with FTC marketing practice standards.

Many states have passed laws restricting companies from offering debt settlement services, but in most of these states, attorneys are exempt from these regulations. As more states implement similar legislation, the use of "attorney exemption" continues to become more attractive to debt settlement industry professionals. Mr. Trejo's presentation will identify some of the major compliance rules that must be followed by attorneys entering the debt settlement arena.

"It is more important than ever before that consumers perform their due diligence to make sure they are working with institutions that adhere to the highest ethical standards within the debt settlement industry," said Jose Trejo. "The fact that the Federal Trade Commission and state regulators are increasing their scrutiny of the debt settlement industry will better serve financially distressed consumers. I am looking forward to addressing this conference as well as learning from the other speakers and attendees. If we wish to be viewed as what we know ourselves to be - professionals offering an important service to those in need - we must be honest, ethical, and professional at all times."
