Focus on awareness, education, legislative influence and best practices will drive continued effort to protect victims; webinar to disclose trends, issues and need for legislation
Santa Fe, NM (PRWEB) April 23, 2009 -- Following the April 1 Victims' Rights Roundtable in Washington, DC, attended by more than 30 federal agencies, financial institutions and other stakeholders including the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice, The Santa Fe Group today announced working groups that will focus on identity crime victims' issues and a Webinar to disclose trends and discuss remedies, including whether new legislation is needed to protect victims. The Santa Fe Group is a financial services consulting firm, and The Santa Fe Group Vendor Council is a consortium of leading service providers to the financial services industry.
At the core of this effort is The Identity Crime Victims Bill of Rights, which calls for consistent processes for handling identity crime incidents in addition to amendments to privacy legislation and regulation so victims can more easily access and correct their personal information records. The five basic rights address the need for legislation that enables individual victims of identity theft to access and correct personally identifiable information (PII) records. The Bill of Rights white paper, titled Victims' Rights: Fighting Identity Crime on the Front Lines, is now available at http://santa-fe-group.com/whitepapers/register.php. Victims' Rights: Fighting Identity Crime on the Front Lines was published and made available at no cost to encourage feedback from interested parties on the Bill of Rights. The Santa Fe Group is revising the paper incorporating the opinions of those attending the roundtable.
The Santa Fe Group is soliciting participation from diverse organizations to ensure the working groups are inclusive and take into account varying points of view. The three working groups that will focus on identity crime victims' issues are:
- Awareness and Education, to help debunk identity crime myths;
- Legislative Influence, to help promote new legislation and rectify the unintended consequences of current laws; and
- Best Practices, to identify, develop and promote resources for victims.

The Santa Fe Group will host a second Victims' Rights roundtable in Washington, DC in June, followed by meetings with legislators to continue its advocacy for the Bill of Rights.
