DUI or driving under influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances is a serious crime in all American States and other western countries. If you are charged under DUI, your driving license and driving privileges are suspended, you have to pay huge fines and you may be even imprisoned. Also, this will be a big blow to your reputation. Your public and social image will be tarnished. This is the reason why you should know how to avoid DUI.
What are the ways to avoid DUI?
The various methods by which you can avoid a DUI charge are listed below.
1. Even though you may feel steady enough to drive your car after drinking it will still be a crime in the eyes of law enforcement officers. Therefore, wait for at least 12 hours after your last drink before you drive your car. If you do have to get out, then take a cab, take a lift from a sober friend, warn or stay in a hotel room. This is the easiest and safest way to avoid a DUI.
2. Keep your car in top condition while you go out at night. Check both the license plates, head lights, signal lights, brake and all before you head out. Do remember to put your license, registration documents and insurance documents into a single envelope and put it into the glove compartment of the car.
3. Always be very polite and respectful to all around you. Drive at a normal speed. Don't go fast because no one is there on the road in the late night. Stop at stop signs and red lights. Don't blast loud music from your car.
4. Don't voluntarily go to the police officer to do balance tests or eye tests. If he asks you to undergo it, do not refuse. Just comply with his wishes.
5. If the police arrests and accuses you of DUI, then ask for a urine test. If they tell you to take a breath test first, then comply with them. Later, ask for a urine test and save a sample.
6. If you are above 21 and in California, remember you do not have to take a 'PAS' breath test (i.e. Preliminary Alcohol Screening test). Tell the police that this is not accurate as the real implied consent' items and you would not want to undergo it.
7. If you are arrested on a DUI case, then immediately hire an attorney who is a specialist in DUI cases. He will guide you on the right course of action. Whether you accept your offends of present a defuse, always do it after consulting with your lawyer in private. Even if the evidences are not in your favor and the case is turning against you, your DUI lawyer will try to plead to the judge on your behalf and get you a reduced punishment.
DUI case is a very serious case and if you are charged under it, act intelligently. Do not oppose the police officials and create extra troubles for yourself. Also, don't plead guilty and fall on their feet immediately. The best thing you can do is to ask for a lawyer and refuse to make any statement except in the presence of the lawyer.
If you handle the case in the right manner, you can get out of it lightly with few scrapes. However, if you don't act wisely, you can get battered with it. So, be calm and, try to avoid DUI. Remember, prevention is better than cure.
