Chicago, IL (PRWEB) March 2, 2009 -- Poll results from a recent webinar conducted by Lightspeed Research-The Foresight Group reveal a strong concern within businesses about the potential effects of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). The Foresight Group surveyed more than 650 HR professionals attending the one-hour webinar, "The Employee Free Choice Act: Engaging Employees in Your Organization is More Important than Ever," on February 24, 2009.
According to the poll, 76 percent of respondents believe the passage of EFCA will have a "very large, large or moderate impact on their organizations." Only 24 percent replied that the legislation would have a "small or very small impact."
Ford & Harrison LLP and co-presenter of the February 24th webinar. "Businesses shouldn't panic, but instead view the current environment as an opportunity to proactively build workplace relations and communicate with employees about workplace issues."
"Unions are committing more resources to organizing and union membership is up after years of decline, signifying a strong commitment on behalf of organized labor towards change through legislative initiatives like EFCA," said Chris Johlie, partner withWhile many companies report being concerned about the impact of EFCA, few currently conduct ongoing assessments to monitor employee attitudes about issues that could lead employees to seek out third-party representation. According to the poll, only 14 percent of respondents regularly use employee surveys to monitor the potential for unionization activity. Forty-seven percent of respondents work for organizations that have never used employee surveys to assess vulnerability to union organizing.
"Employee surveys give workers a voice and facilitate direct communication with employers in resolving workplace issues, provided the employer is committed to acting on the issues identified in the survey," explained Jerry Halamaj, senior consultant and director at The Foresight Group and co-presenter of the EFCA webinar. "Employees who have a vehicle to express themselves tend to be more engaged. As engagement increases, employees are less likely to look outside their organizations for a voice and the attractiveness of unionization is likely to fade."
