After spending twenty years in prison, Khalil has spent the past ten years speaking, training, and working with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated men and women to help them successfully transition back to their families and communities.
One in 100 Americans are in prison. Nearly two-thirds of people exiting U.S. prisons are re-arrested within three years of their release. States collectively spent $50 billion last year on corrections. These facts are part of a growing crisis in communities around the country. Khalil believes a critical step towards addressing this crisis is to empower and equip incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals with the tools necessary to take responsibility for their re-entry.
"As someone who spent twenty years in prison, I know first hand the challenges of re-entry," says Khalil.
In response to those challenges he developed an evidence-based curriculum titled, Psychology of Incarceration: A Community Re-Entry and Recovery Program. It is an innovative eight-part DVD series designed to promote peer driven correctional and community programming.
Additionally, Khalil has authored a self-help guide for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals titled, Taking Responsibility: A Faith-Based Approach for Successful Re-Entry. Taking Responsibility integrates a faith-based curriculum with evidence-based practices. Both curriculum have a facilitator's guide book for those interested in teaching the programs.
At recent workshops and speaking engagements in both Omaha, Nebraska and New Orleans, Louisiana, participants gave high marks for Khalil's fresh approach and new perspectives on re-entry and restorative justice.
Jane Prine, Executive Director of Phoenix Transitional Services, noted that Khalil's message for the people she works with inspires real hope and change because, "it affirms the power of offenders to take responsibility for both their incarceration and successful re-entry."

Currently, Khalil is gearing up for the Department of Justice scheduled national release of solicitations for Second Chance Act grants to state and local government on March 23, 2009. Applications from state and local governments will be due by May 21, 2009. Solicitation for the grants to non-profit organizations is expected to be released early next year. Khalil plans to help organizations and faith-based groups across the country develop the programmatic capacity and infrastructure to leverage the upcoming funding opportunities.
With the integration of streaming media on his website, Khalil Osiris will provide hands on guidance and assistance by broadcasting live webcasts, sending videomails and participating in live video conferences.
According to Khalil, "By using streaming media tools from our website, we have a plan to help community organizations as well as state and local agencies secure Second Chance funding for their re-entry work." Further he noted, "It will provide our team the ability to support many more people on an interactive basis. That makes the application of this new technology very exciting for us."

About Khalil Osiris, M.A.
Khalil Osiris is an author, college professor, and pastor who spent 20 years of his life in prison. During his incarceration at Norfolk Prison Colony in Massachusetts, he earned a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree from Boston University--aware of the historic significance of the facts that Norfolk was where Malcolm X served time and Boston University was where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., earned his doctoral degree.
