$225,000 in proceeds from sale of eco-friendly home benefits Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
Atlanta - When Kinshasa K. Williams closed on her new EarthCraft home in West Highlands Dec. 31, 2008, she became the owner of Brock Built's Green House. The Green House showcases environmentally friendly and sustainable design features attainable by the typical Atlanta family, and has been open to the public for tours since completion in August 2008. Williams' purchase not only meant she had found her perfect home, it also resulted in a $225,000 donation to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
"I had been looking for a home for more than a year and when I toured the Green House for the first time, I immediately fell in love with the eco-friendly features and finishes," said Williams. "During college, I was a volunteer at Children's, so when I learned that proceeds from the sale of the house would be donated there, I knew that I had not only found my new home, but also that the proceeds would benefit a very worthy organization."
Prior to purchasing the Green House, Williams lived in a condominium in Midtown. A native of New Orleans, Williams was immediately attracted to the Green House's large porches and Craftsman style. The interiors of the home showcase several green features that appealed to her including energy efficient appliances, plumbing, doors and windows as well as environmentally friendly paints. Features of the exterior of the home include an herb garden, rain garden, outdoor fireplace, rain barrel and much more.
"The eco-friendly features of the home were a major selling point and will help me save money in the long run," said Williams. "In my previous home I did not have a backyard, let alone a garden, so I am thrilled to have a personal supply of fresh herbs right in my backyard."
The house's West Highlands location is convenient to dining, shopping and entertainment in Atlanta and Williams' office in Midtown. "I am very excited about what the future holds for West Highlands. A lot of plans have been made for this area and I feel extremely lucky to have found my perfect home in this up-and-coming area of Atlanta," said Williams.
During the construction of this EarthCraft home, numerous vendors donated their time and resources to the project. Brock Built partnered with WSB-TV Channel 2, which documented the construction of the Green House during its "Going Green 2008" campaign.
The EarthCraft program is a voluntary green building program, which serves as a blueprint for healthy, comfortable homes that reduce utility bills and protect the environment. EarthCraft homes are thoroughly inspected and tested (for factors such as air leakage andcarbon monoxide safety) before the homeowner moves in. They are proven to help save energy and water and conserve natural resources. They are more affordable because they helphomeowners lower energy costs by up to 30 percent, lower maintenance and repair costs, and even lower doctor's bills for health problems related to poor indoor air quality.
