Lumension Uncovers Results of Security Data Protection Survey

Conducted by TechWeb, Survey Reveals 50% of End Users Have Altered Security Settings Leaving Them Open to Significant Risk

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) November 18, 2008 -- Securing business-technology systems isn't getting any easier, according to the results of the Lumension and TechWeb Research "State of Data Protection" survey. The recent study details how users often dismiss internal security policies and even download unauthorized data and applications to their work machines for personal use.

The combination of rising threats coupled with the growing complexity of security technologies and current economic challenges is forcing more companies to seek new ways to protect their systems and data while doing so with fewer resources
Attackers have grown in the sophistication of their tactics and, as a result, are developing more varied types of spyware, Trojans, and keystroke loggers than the highly visible and destructive worms and viruses of the past. Survey results uncover:

  • 72 percent of respondents view worms, viruses and spyware as the top threats to their IT security;
  • 52 percent view the accidental dissemination of confidential and regulated data and outside    hackers as the biggest concern;
  • 55 percent cited the number of vulnerabilities and fast-changing threats among the greatest operational hurdles to optimizing their IT security efforts; and
  • 22 percent of respondents who are considering outsourcing said that they currently are considering outsourcing the management of IDS/IPS.
"The combination of rising threats coupled with the growing complexity of security technologies and current economic challenges is forcing more companies to seek new ways to protect their systems and data while doing so with fewer resources," explained Pat Clawson, Chairman and CEO of Lumension. "The nature of the threat landscape is constantly morphing, so security technologies are continuously evolving and improving. As a result, it is critical that companies be on the lookout for new approaches to tackling infrastructure security, and doing so more cost-effectively."
