Hospitals Prevail in Unfair Labor Practice Case : New Web Site Launched by Hospitals on Labor Issues

STANFORD, Calif. (Business Wire EON/PRWEB ) August 8, 2008 -- An administrative law judge has found that persons claiming to represent SEIU Local 715 engaged in unfair labor practices when they failed to provide Stanford Hospital & Clinics and Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital with necessary information that the Hospitals had requested to determine if Local 715 still was in existence and representing employees at the Hospitals.

The Judge ordered that the Hospitals be provided with the information they had requested and noted that the substantial weight of the evidence reflects that the Employers information requests were both relevant and necessary for the Employer to determine the identity of the labor organization with which it had an obligation to bargain.

We have doubted for some time that Local 715 continued to exist as a union and are pleased with this ruling, said Greg Souza, vice president of human resources for Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital. Because the International Union directed the leadership of Local 715, which has since merged into a new union, Local 521, to transfer employee representation to yet another union, United Healthcare Workers, all without the employees consent, we were left with no option but to withdraw recognition of Local 715 effective July 29, 2008.

Since the Hospitals withdrawal of recognition, those claiming to represent 715 have disclaimed all interest in continuing to represent the employees.

SEIU Local 715 had been representing approximately 1450 housekeepers, food service workers, nursing assistants, phlebotomists, unit secretaries, transporters and employees in non-technical and non-professional titles at the hospitals.

These employees will continue their employment but without representation. These employees have the same rights, pay and benefits whether represented by a union or not, said Souza.

In other news, the Hospitals today announced the launch of an online resource, www.stanfordpackardfacts.com, to ensure that all employees have timely and accurate information regarding labor representation.

We remain committed to providing our formerly represented employees with factual information so that they can make the best, informed decision about what is right for them, said Lori Curry, vice president of human resources for Stanford Hospital & Clinics.

Stanford and Packard Childrens Hospitals respect the employees rights to select union representation or to remain independent.
