Fully Comp Car Insurance Causes Problems for Unaware Drivers

Motorists driving other people's vehicles are often doing so believing they're covered by their own fully comprehensive insurance policy. Swinton has exposed this common misconception and is warning motorists that they could face a hefty fine and points on their licence. If involved in an accident the driver could even serve a prison sentence or be sued by the injured party.

Manchester, Greater Manchester (PRWEB) August 6, 2008 -- Drivers could be unwittingly breaking the law and getting behind the wheel without suitable car insurance warns Swinton.

Research by the UK's leading high street insurance retailer, Swinton has revealed shocking figures suggesting that a large proportion of UK drivers think that they're automatically allowed to drive any other vehicle providing they have their own fully comp insurance policy.

In actual fact this is very often not the case - only some policies provide third party cover for people to drive in emergency situations and other policies don't cover you at all - regardless of whether the driver has fully comprehensive insurance.

The survey revealed that over 80% of the drivers surveyed said that there had been occasions when they either had, or would have liked, to drive someone else's vehicle. Swinton found the most common reasons for driving other vehicles were driving family or friends to hospital or airport, borrowing a larger car or van to pick up new furniture or for trips to the tip to dump rubbish. Test driving used cars before buying was also another frequently mentioned example.

In response to this Swinton has launched Short Term car insurance cover on its website - a temporary policy available to anyone over 21 who wants cover for 24 hours or up to 28 days. The policy provides fully comprehensive cover for the driver and the borrowed vehicle - crucially meaning the car owner's no claims bonus isn't put at risk in the event of an accident. Starting at just £10, short term cover is often a cheaper and easier alternative to adding a named driver to an existing policy.

Chris Collings, Swinton's Director of Insurer Development said: "We've found that drivers are often under the impression that having fully comprehensive insurance means they can drive any car they want. This is very often not the case and we'd always advise people check the terms of their insurance before borrowing another car or lending their vehicle to family or friends. Driving without insurance is illegal and can have potentially catastrophic consequences, so we've developed our Short Term cover as another option to ensure these pitfalls can be avoided.

"The short term policy which is now available on our website allows you to take out a policy on any vehicle so there is no risk to you, the owner or their precious no claims bonus."

Swinton is working with Provident Insurance plc to provide this short term insurance - visit www.swinton.co.uk/car/shortterm/ or tel: 0800 107 2545 for more details.
