Family Hopes to Educate Young People to Save Lives on College Campuses.
(PRWEB) July 28, 2008 -- The family of Jack Phoummarath, the University of Texas freshman who died in a hazing binge drinking party on December 10, 2005, announce they have settled their lawsuit against the Defendants in this case (Cause No. 2006-05462) for $4.2 Million. Phoummarath, an 18-year-old freshman went through the Lambda Phi Epsilon pledge process in the Fall of 2005, died from acute alcohol poisoning with a blood content level of .50.
With the settlement proceeds, the Phoummarath family has created an educational video entitled, "Enough is Enough." This video, found at the website www.InMemoryOfJack.com is designed for teenagers and young adults to educate them on the dangers of hazing and binge drinking. "We do not want Jack's death to be in vain and by this educational program, we hope to save families in the future from the great despair we have suffered from the loss of our youngest son," stated Khongsavay Phoummarath--Jack's father. Jack's mother, Soukha also commented, "Jack was destined to have been a great leader, we hope that he will be remembered as someone who made a difference--even in death."
The family is also working with the University of Texas to set up an $8,000 - $10,000 per year scholarship in Jack's name that will enable a student to attend the University while, at the same time, planning and promoting a hazing/binge drinking educational program on campus. The University of Texas has been cooperative in setting up this program to compliment other similar educational programs on campus. "We hope this scholarship will not only benefit the one student who receives it, but also touch many other lives through the hard work of that student," stated the Phoummaraths.
Phoummarath's personal injury attorney, Randy Sorrels, worked with the family and the Defendants to maximize the effectiveness of the video. Three young men in the fraternity were indicted in Austin for hazing and as a part of their plea agreement, they participated in this educational video. "We hope that through this case and these educational opportunities, the dangerous activities that many fraternities sponsor will be curtailed," said Sorrels. "These young men and women who were caught up in this tragedy will be forever changed as a result of the loss of Jack Phoummarath. The video sets out powerful clips, photographs, and videotape to grab the attention of its viewer and highlight the dangers associated with hazing," noted Sorrels. It is not, the Phoummarath family emphasizes, an anti-Greek video.
Additionally, an award-winning documentary, The Pledge, about the life and tragic death of Jack Phoummarath, has been produced. This Twin Lion Communications legal documentary received a Platinum Award at the 2008 Houston International Film Festival. "We will never forget Jack, and we hope our efforts will allow him to live through other people for many years to come," stated his parents.
