New York City, NY (PRWEB) June 26, 2008 -- Nicholas Papain, managing partner and trial attorney of the firm Sullivan, Papain, Block, McGrath & Cannavo, P.C., will be sworn in as the 41st President of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association on June 26, 2008. He will succeed Jeff S. Korek, of the firm Gersowitz, Libo & Korek.
"I am both humbled and honored to take on the challenge and responsibility of the NYSTLA Presidency," said Mr. Papain. "I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure the rights of everyday New Yorkers are vigilantly guarded."
Mr. Papain, one of the state's most prominent negligence and product liability trial lawyers, has been steadfast in his representation of those who have been injured through the wrongdoing of others. His skills as a trial lawyer were best illustrated when he played a leading and critical role in a fee proceeding before a national arbitration panel regarding Sullivan Papain's representation of the State of New York in its action against the major tobacco companies which resulted in a record $25 billion recovery for the State.
The Sullivan Papain firm together with two other New York and three national firms were awarded an unprecedented fee for their contribution to what authorities hailed as "the most successful legal attack on a major public health hazard in the history of recorded civilization." Nick is also responsible for managing the Firm's operations, which includes overseeing some 35 attorneys and 65 support personnel.
Mr. Papain will take over the one-year post from Mr. Korek, who has exhibited great leadership through a year of unprecedented tumult and change in New York State. Amidst the shake-ups in Albany and invigorated attacks by self-proclaimed "tort-reformers," NYSTLA was steadfast and unequivocal in its commitment to protecting consumers and the civil justice system.
Mr. Papain has pledged to continue to work tirelessly on many different fronts -- protecting patient safety and the rights of those seriously injured through medical malpractice, safeguarding worker safety at construction sites by maintaining New York's Scaffold Law, and defending consumers from insurance lobbies looking to take away rights of those injured in accidents.
Assembly member Michael Gianaris remarked, "More than ever, the fight for civil justice needs a strong leader with a history of protecting consumers. I have known Nick Papain for many years and am confident that he is more than up to the task. I wish him the best of luck."
The New York State Trial Lawyers Association was formed in 1953 to assure that the wrongfully injured have full access to the civil justice system. NYSTLA and its 4,000 members statewide work vigorously to be the voice for the voiceless and protect the rights of all injured individuals in New York State.
