NAMWOLF reaches out to Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to enhance opportunities for minority and women owned businesses.
Milwaukee, WI (PRWEB) March 4, 2008 -- The National Association of Minority and Women Owned Law Firms (NAMWOLF) recently received a response from the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) regarding the use of minority and women owned businesses. After learning that Northern States Power Company was seeking the PSCW's approval for debt securities financing, NAMWOLF reached out to the PSCW since there did not appear to be any minority or women owned businesses included in the proposed transaction.
NAMWOLF is a national trade association that advocates for promoting true diversity in the legal profession by fostering the development of long lasting relationships between preeminent minority and women owned law firms and private/public entities.
"We are quite confident that there are ample roles for MBE/WBE law firms, financial advisors and investments banks to play if allowed a place at the table," wrote NAMWOLF's Managing Director Yolanda Coly. The PSCW responded stating Ms. Coly's letter will be made part of the records in the referenced dockets relating to Northern States Power Company's proposed financings.
The next step for NAMWOLF is to contact the Commissioners of the PSCW and encourage them to adopt rules similar to that of the California Public Utilities Commission (PU). Pursuant to PU Code Section 8283, legislature requires an annual submission by Commission-regulated gas, electric, and telephone utilities, and their regulated subsidiaries and affiliates, with gross annual revenues exceeding $25 million, of absolute plans for increasing procurement from women-, minority-, and disabled veteran-owned business enterprises (WMDVBEs). General Order (GO) 156 requires each utility to establish goals for utility purchases of services, goods, and fuel as a percentage of total procurement from WMDVBEs. The goals are 15 percent (minority-owned), 5 percent (women-owned), and 1.5 percent (disabled veteran-owned). NAMWOLF is optimistic the PSCW will be open to establishing MBE/WBE goals.
NAMWOLF will be holding its fourth Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas on November 13 and 14, 2008. For more information please call 414-277-1139.
