Houston, TX (PRWEB) January 25, 2008 -- Unity National Bank Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Arthur Schechter, Former Ambassador to the Commonwealth of Bahamas, has been elected to its Board of Directors.

Mr. Schechter served as the US Ambassador to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas from 1998-2001. He has a distinguished legal background, and is licensed in to practice in all Texas Courts; the US Supreme Court; the US Circuit Court for the Fifth, Eleventh and Fourth Circuits; and, the US District Courts for the Southern, Northern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas.

In 2002 he became Chairman of the Board to the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Texas. Senior Counsel at the law firm of Schechter, McElwee, Shaffer & Harris, L.L.P.; President of Westlane Capital Corporation; President of The Schechter Group, a mediation and arbitration firm.

He has a long history of committed, diverse and broad-based community service and charitable involvement that span the State of Texas and our nation. He has served on or is serving on numerous boards, including the Executive Committee for the Super Bowl; Board of Directors of the William A. Lawson Institute for Peace and Prosperity; S.E.A.R.C.H. (Service to the homeless); the Institute of International Education; The Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, Honorary Board Member; The Southwest Region, Anti-Defamation League; the Mickey Leland Kibbutz Foundation; and the US Holocaust Museum Council (appointed by President Clinton). He has served as President of the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, Chair of the United Jewish Campaign, President of Congregation Beth Israel and President of the American Jewish Committee. He is a former chairman of the Texas Financing Committee for the Clinton/Gore (1991-1998), the Child Advocates of Houston and is a founding member of Theatre Under the Stars and the Youth Symphony Board.

He is the recipient of the SEARCH Outstanding Leadership Award, Career & Recovery Resources (A United Way Agency) Barrier Breaker Award, National American Jewish Committee's Human Relations Award, the Jewish Chataqua Society's Benefactor Award, the "Love Award" from Children's Advocates of Harris County, the NAACP President's Award, the Star of Texas Award from 21st Century Democrats and the Outstanding Public Service Award from the US Coast Guard, and "Houston's most Fascinating" by Baylor College Library.

He is listed in Who's Who; America; The South and Southwest; Texas; American Law; Society; Politics; and in the World.
