Two Schnader Attorneys Appointed to Maryland Attorney General's Environmental Advisory Council

Two attorneys from Schnader's Washington D.C. law office have been selected by Maryland's Attorney General as councilmen to the Environmental Advisory Council. They will aid the Attorney General in evaluating and addressing key environmental issues.

Britton - who is Managing Partner of Schnader's Washington, D.C. office - and Steven R. Johnson have been appointed by Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler to a special Environmental Advisory Council.

The Attorney General created the council to assist him in identifying priority environmental issues and to help guide his Office's environmental policy and enforcement initiatives. The council is comprised of a broad range of environmental attorneys, advocates, and experts, and will serve as a sounding board and resource for the Attorney General as he continues to pursue his environmental agenda. Members of the council, who held their first meeting on October 2, 2007 at the University of Maryland School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland, will continue to meet several times a year, and will update Attorney General Gansler on a wide range of issues including: how the Office can build stronger relationships with Maryland's environmental community; how the Office can maximize available resources to achieve the greatest impact; assisting in the development and enforcement of environmental laws, especially within the Chesapeake Bay area; and, how to better educate the public to drive home the message of the urgent need to clean up the environment.

Mr. Britton, who serves as the managing partner of Schnader's attorneys in Washington DC, is a member of the Firm's Litigation Services Department. He has substantial experience in land use and environmental law. He has litigated issues under the Clean Water, Clean Air and National Environmental Policy Acts and other environmental and transportation related legislation in federal and state courts and administrative agencies. He also has broad experience with the regulations and rulings of environmental regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Federal Highway Administration. Formerly, Mr. Britton served with the UNHCR in Bangkok, Thailand, and Khartoum, Sudan, coordinating refugee relief operations, including drafting and implementing international contracts. He is a former chair and current commissioner of the City of Rockville Planning Commission (Maryland). Rockville, Maryland - located 12 miles northwest of Washington, D.C. - is the third largest city in Maryland and serves as the county seat for Montgomery County.

Mr. Johnson is also a member of the international law firm's Litigation Services Department, representing clients in environmental, land use and administrative matters. He has advised clients on compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and land use regulatory programs. Additionally, he has handled administrative proceedings and litigation under federal programs such as the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the National Historic Preservation Act, and CERCLA, as well as state regulatory programs governing brownfields, underground storage tanks, surface water management, transportation management, environmental assessments, and zoning. Mr. Johnson also serves as a commissioner and currently serves as the chair of the City of Rockville Planning Commission (Maryland).
