Washington, D.C. (PRWEB) November 1, 2007 -- Alley Cat Allies, the national advocate for stray and feral cats, today announced the launch of the online Alley Cat Allies Anti-Cruelty Resource Center (www.alleycat.org/anticruelty). The site will provide analyses of U.S. laws, public policy, and current events involving cat cruelty--such as the upcoming Galveston cat-killing trial.

"For too long, the fight to end cruelty has ignored stray and feral cats," said Wendy Anderson, legal director of Alley Cat Allies. "We intend this new site to serve as an educational resource for journalists, policymakers, and concerned citizens seeking information about anti-cruelty statutes and how they apply to cats."

Currently, the website offers an analysis of the felony criminal trial in Galveston, TX, in which a man is accused of shooting and killing a feral cat with a .22 caliber rifle. Jury selection in the trial is expected to begin next week.

"Intentionally killing a cat is a crime in all 50 states, but very few media noted that fact when reporting on the Galveston case," said Anderson.

"The so-called 'piping plover defense,' in which he claims he killed a cat to save an endangered species of bird in Galveston, is a fiction," said Anderson. "People are not allowed to kill cats to protect endangered species. In fact, the piping plovers in Galveston are already protected by federal law."

The Alley Cat Allies Anti-Cruelty Resource Center can be found at www.alleycat.org/anticruelty.
