Lumension Implements Automated Conficker Scan Detection, Remediation and Malware Removal with Latest Updates to its Vulnerability Management Solution Offering
Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) April 1, 2009 -- As the Conficker worm continues to spread, Lumension®, a global leader in security management, announced today that it has added additional scanning detection, patching and remediation and malware removal support capabilities to its Vulnerability Management Solution, to better-arm enterprises against this growing malware threat. This additional detection capability will help organizations automatically identify the multiple variants of the Conficker worm - which has been wreaking havoc since November 2008. Lumension's enhanced Conficker capabilities can be used to support the automatic identification and removal of Conficker from infected machines and then apply the necessary patches to mitigate this growing threat. These latest enhancements when combined with Lumension Data and Endpoint Protection Solutions offer complete protection against Conficker and other sophisticated forms of malware.
Conficker is an aggressively spreading computer worm that has been laying down a powerful botnet infrastructure that can then be managed by malicious controllers.
To better protect customers from the potential threat posed by the Conficker worm, Lumension has delivered the following enhanced capabilities within its Vulnerability Management Solution offering:
- Lumension Scan detection for MS08-067 (W3492), available to Lumension Scan customers
- Patch support for MS08-067, available to Lumension Patch & Remediation customers
- Lumension Scan detection for Conficker infection evidence, available to Lumension Scan customers as part of Lumension Scan update #170
- Malware Removal support as part of Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool, the latest definition files are now available to Lumension Patch & Remediation customers
The initial appearance of Conficker utilized a fairly sophisticated polymorphic approach that exploited a buffer overflow vulnerability to remotely distribute the malware code throughout IT networks. Later variants of the Conficker malware leveraged USB devices to propagate the malware code onto new endpoint systems. This combination of high-tech and low-tech approaches proved highly effective by evading traditional signature based perimeter defenses.
"Conficker is a wakeup call to everyone in that we need to realize that traditional signature based perimeter defenses are no longer effective in stopping sophisticated malware attacks said Pat Clawson, Chairman and CEO, Lumension. "Organizations must add new technologies and layers of defense such as device control and whitelisting based application security. By adding these latest enhancements to our Vulnerability Management Solution, and when combined with our Data and Endpoint Protection solutions, we offer the greatest amount of protection to our customers' against this new breed of sophisticated malware like Conficker."
