Feder faces criminal charges of manslaughter and trafficking in controlled substances. The suit filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court alleges Feder and his former employer, Compass Health Systems (CHS), are responsible for the death of former patient Rachel Finzi. When Finzi was 18 years old, her parents brought her to CHS in North Miami for treatment of her depression and other psychological issues. When she came under Feder's care, he gave her marijuana and illegal prescription medications and proceeded to engage in sexual relations with her. In 2006, Finzi, who was then 20, was found dead at Feder's North Miami-Dade apartment. The lawsuit against CHS and Feder seeks recovery for Finzi's medical expenses as well as the pain and suffering of Rachel's parents, Richard and Esther Finzi.

"The Finzi family believes Compass Health Systems was negligent by employing someone like Adam Feder, who faced pending criminal charges of possession of marijuana when he was hired, and allowing him to treat a young and emotionally vulnerable patient like Rachel Finzi," attorney Durkee said. "Although nothing could ever replace this family's loss, we hope our lawsuit will help raise the public's awareness of the drug-abuse issues affecting our community and serve as a call to action for stricter screening and monitoring of health-care workers, particularly those with significant power over the fate of our loved ones."
